ASP flood expansion at $50 oil

Is that an opportunity on his net pay map?

Empty self storage unitAlkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) injection has been popular in the past. But some operators are suspending ASP injection and returning to water flood.

But one operator is expanding his ASP flood by three times the land area. He commenced an ASP pilot two years ago. Now, with $50 oil, he's ready to expand this flood, increase pressure, maximize recovery, add reserves and add production rate. You can see his analysis of the performance of this flood by ordering his application using the "Get this application now" button below.

He also showed a portion of the pool offsetting his ASP flood. That land may be getting support from his injection. Is the offsetting acreage yours? Or is it available? Check out his net pay mapping by ordering his application.

Why watch technology through applications?

There are at least three advantages to reading about the flood through applications rather than through SPE papers.

First, not every flood is discussed in a republic-of-science forum like technical papers. But every flood has at least one (and usually many more) applications.

Second, not all the operational details of a failure are disclosed in technical papers. But applications contain many technical details from injectant schedules to operating pressures.

And third, applications are ground-truthed to specific well locations. Technical papers are not.

Applications contain much more technology

When a technical author writes about a flood, his space is limited. His adjudicators are more interested in critiquing what he has written when they should be looking for what he has omitted.

This flood's success or failure will not likely be discussed in an SPE forum, or even be covered by an article in a trade magazine. But you can read all about it from the operator's applications.

On the contrary, the regulator is always more interested in the issues an applicant has not declared. They want to understand the issues that will affect other ASP installations in the future. They make their queries a matter of public record so they can be found again by future regulators.

If you wish, you can study this ASP installation in depth. All applications are associated with specific locations. You can see each one of the injector UWIs in the application documents. You can look at their injection history and study each pattern at your leisure. Such an opportunity is not available as follow up from an SPE paper -- rarely are actual locations disclosed.

You can search for all ASP installations in seconds in AppIntel using the yahoo-like natural language search. Just type into the KiP box asp flood or polymer flood.

Applications are leading indicators

How can you be ready for anything? You need to be watching what other operators are doing. Applications are leading indicators of future industry activity.

They broadcast the pessimism (or optimism) of an operator. They indicate the operator's short and long term plans.

Applications are an exposé of practical technology use. They show how technology works out in the field. They indicate success and failure of each type of technology. They even offer ways to conduct look-back analysis on technology installations.

The best way to stay on top of oil field technology is to watch applications.

You can get new applications within 20 miles of your operation delivered to your inbox the morning after they are submitted. AppIntel does that.
